When I sat for my last paper after a four-year course, I did not have clarity on the things to do post-campus/post-graduate life. Most of us spend our last year perfecting our grades and the final projects, alongside other things to do on campus. We do not pay much thought to the next stage of our life. However, you should not stress over it.
There are many things to do post-campus/post-graduate life. Different people handle things differently. We all have to understand that our life paths are different, though we are all on the same journey. As you maneuver you’re your way post campus, do not compare with your peers, classmates, let them challenge you.
Among the many things to do post-campus/post-graduate life, taking care of your mental health is the number one priority. Focus on your mental health. Depending on the circumstances you are in life, your mental health is more at stake when you complete campus than at any other moment in your life. A lot of things are changing, you are simply adulting. Adulting has no manual, you figure it on your own. It is not easy, but it is worth it. Enjoy the process. Be fully present.
Here are some of the things to do post-campus/post-graduate that I wish I did. I might have done some of them but others I am learning along the way.
- Create an exit plan.
Before fully exiting campus, try and create an exit plan. This is not one of the things to do post-campus/post-graduate life but on your way out. Think through the things that will occupy your mind as you navigate through the waters. Remember no one has it figured out, so you don’t have it figure out. You just need a simple plan that will keep you motivated about life.
Your exit plan could be a business, a new course, or volunteer work. If you have some savings or you have somewhere you could access funds from, start a small business to support you and keep you busy in the meantime.
As one of the things to do post-campus/post-graduate life, pursue your hobby and interests. The post-campus/post-graduate life gives you space and time to think about and invest in things that, make you happy.
One of the most fulfilling and empowering things to do post-campus/post-graduate life is to do volunteer work. You can volunteer in an organization of your choice or community service. Volunteer work helps make a meaningful contribution, open new networks and expose yourself to opportunities.
- Start applying for internships while still on campus.
I asked one of my friends how he landed an internship a month after his final exams. He told me that before he left school, he had already applied to over 30 companies. If you are almost winding up on your campus education, one of the things to do post-campus/post-graduate life is to apply for internships. Do not apply to one company. I think I applied to over 50 companies, before getting my first interview.
Do not give up on the internship application, it can get frustrating but be hopeful.
I have come to learn the power of networking is the greatest of all when it comes to moving forward in life. We live in the social media age, identifying people with similar interests, careers and passions are easy. LinkedIn is a powerful tool used by professionals. You can connect with people in your field or another area you think would be of benefit to your field.
Attend webinars, workshops, and conferences. Initiate conversation with people whenever given a chance to. I know it is hard particularly if you are an introvert.
One of the things to do post-campus/post-graduate life is to find your community. Pray and hope that the universe will align you with the right people. Find your community, your tribe, and like-minded people. Out of experience, I know this is not as easy as it is sounds, but I wish I purposed myself to do so as soon as I finished campus.
Networking is key, and it is one of the most important things to do post-campus/post-graduate life.
- Specialized certification.
Of the career-shaping things to do post-campus/post-graduate life, is to get a specialized certification. If you want to pursue a career in a certain field, taking a related course is an extra boost to your C.V. Careers like finance and accounting will require you to be a member of a professional body.
Platforms are offering certified courses online. Some are free requiring you to just pay for the certificates. If you are looking for things to do post-campus/post-graduate life, taking a certified course is one of them. Job seekers with a special certification are more favored by employers.
Self-development is at the heart of the things you should do post-campus/post-graduate life. Invest in yourself. Look out for possible ways to grow yourself. Mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Embark on a learning journey. Discover yourself, your passion, and the things that add to your joy and happiness. Self-investment is the best you can give yourself.
Get rid of your toxic traits and the things that hold you back. Aim to become the best version of yourself, in all areas. Heal. Forgive and move on.
Read books. They will open your imagination along empowering you. Check out the most impactful books that I have read. Create a healthy routine. Adopt healthy eating behaviors and thinking patterns. Work on yourself.
